Prince of Pirates is a solid installment in Philip Caveney’s Sebastian Darke series. For those who enjoyed Prince of Fools, this book delivers more adventure, danger, and three friends working together to overcome obstacles.
Ready to find their next adventure, Prince of Piratesopens with half-elf Sebastian, his trusty buffalope Max, and half-sized soldier/adventurer friend Cornelius about to enter a deep, dark forest on their way to the coast to find a ship to take them on the hunt for the long lost treasure of pirate King, Captain Callinestra. While in the woods, Sebastian is bewitched by the beautiful, evil shape-changer Leonora. After barely escaping from her clutches, she plagues them as they head East, even following them out to sea. The three friends enlist the help of a spunky sea captain, the beautiful Jenna, who has feeling for Sebastian that aren’t returned because of his obsession with Leonora. Their wild adventures put them in harm’s way again and again but by working together and trusting each other, the friends survive one scrape after another.
Caveney’s characters constant bickering and Sebastian’s continuous befuddlement is tiring, and throughout the book the friends are repeatedly having to relearn to trust each other and themselves; but, for readers looking for a quick, light adventure story with pirates, treasure, and lots of danger, Prince of Pirates will be a fine choice.
